Lent is a period of forty days that reminds us of Jesus’s forty days in the wilderness. It’s a time to reflect on what we have done, do penance by acknowledging our transgressions, and commit to renewing ourselves for the year ahead.
Ash Wednesday services include the imposition of ashes, where the priest uses ashes to mark a cross on the forehead of each congregant. The ashes are a reminder of the finite character of the physical body (“you are dust and to dust you shall return”), in contrast to the infinite life that God offers to our souls.
