Sun Oct 1 – Rev. Drew’s 10-Year Anniversary – We observe the 10-year anniversary of Rev. Drew MacDonald’s leadership of the parish. There will be a presentation following each service, and a cake during coffee time, to honour Drew and and thank him for his decade of Kingdom work at St. John’s.

Mon Oct 2, 5:00 p.m. – Youth Night at SJYM – Youth are invited for an evening of food, fellowship, fun, and sometimes, frank talk. At 5:00 p.m., meet in the Garnsworthy room for a soup supper that you help make. At 7:00 p.m. gather for a free-form evening in the Youth Lounge.

Thur Oct 12, 7:30 p.m. – Lychgate Group Presentation – This month, we welcome Scott Kennedy, co-author of 200 years at St. John’s York Mills, to speak about the rich history of York Mills, Toronto, and the contributions our congregation has made. Sun Sept 10, 10:30 a.m. – Children’s Ministry Begins its 2017-2018 Year – We begin the Children’s Ministry for the school year 2017-2018. For children from pre-school to grade 6.

Sun Sept 10, 11:30 a.m. – Barbecue for Outreach – Following the Open Door, the SJYM Outreach team is hosting a fundraising barbecue on the patio. Bishop Kevin Robertson will be here. Join us on the patio for burgers, hot dogs, and cold treats. There’s also a car wash, and someone might be getting a pie in the face.

Mon Sept 11, 6:00 p.m. – Handchime and Handbell music programs start – The kickoff evening for the Handchime Choir (grades 3 to 6) and the Rockin’ Ringers (grade 7 and up). We encourage and welcome new ringers! No musical experience needed – enjoy free music lessons, have fun and make new friends, and take part in concerts including Sing and Ring at Christmas.

Thu Apr 13, 7:30 p.m. – Maundy Thursday – An informal observation of the Last Supper, followed by the stripping of the church to prepare for Good Friday.

It’s part of A Cross-Cultural Experience Through Art and Music, an afternoon of tours and performances for Myseum’s Intersections Festival. The event runs from 1 to 7 p.m., with the Handbells performing at 3:45 p.m.

  • 10:30 – Prayer, Teaching, and Song – A service for today’s world. Includes a children’s program.

Thur Oct 22, 7:30 p.m. – Spirit Cinema – On screen: Soul Searching: The Journey of Thomas Merton. A documentary that goes to the heart of Merton’s spiritual journey, it offers insights into the interior landscape of a spiritual giant of modern times. This is a fundraising event for Contemplative Fire.

Fri Oct 23, 1 to 3 p.m. – “A Companion’s Journey” course starts – A six-week course at St. John’s (to Nov 27) to help you craft a rhythm of life based on prayer, study and action. Offered by Contemplative Fire, for those new to Contemplative Fire as well as those who are Companions.

Sat Oct 24, 1 to 4 p.m – Holy Seeing – At Church of St. Mary Magdalene. An afternoon retreat hosted by Anne+. Can images or works of art speak into our hearts? Learn how to see more clearly and to find God’s presence. All welcome; please register with Anne+.

Sun Oct 25, 4 p.m. – Contemplative Fire Monthly Gathering – Worship at St. Leonard’s Church, 25 Wanless Ave, near Yonge and Lawrence. An experiential encounter with scripture and a contemplative communion. Expect stillness, spaciousness, and room to meditate and participate as and if you like.

Sun Sept 6 – Last Day of Children’s Ministry Summer Program – Last Sunday of the Children’s Ministry summer session: a drop-in program featuring outdoor activities, during the 10 a.m. service.

Tue Sept 8, 6:30 p.m. – Men’s Supper Club – Our first meeting after the summer, and with Drew following his sabbatical. For discussion: the book Basic Christianity by John Stott – a look at the historical justification for Christian theology. Gather at 6:30, dinner at 7:00, discussion at 7:30.

Thur Sept 10, 4:00 p.m. – Refugee Response – St. John’s is considering a response to the refugee crisis in Europe. We meet in the Garnsworthy room with a member of the Anglican United Refugee Alliance to explore options including sponsorship. All welcome; contact Tim+ for more info.

Thur Sept 10, 7:30 p.m. – Lychgate Group Meeting – Ladies, our first gathering for the season includes an update from Michelle McDonald about the Sandy Bay project, planning for our 2015-2016 year, and a potluck table of appetizers and desserts.

Sun Sept 13, 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. – Brass Ringers start – For teens and teens-plus, our first rehearsal of the year. New ringers with a musical background are welcome – learn how to play handbells!

Mon Sept 14, 6 to 7 p.m. – Chime Choir starts – Boys and girls from grades 3 and up are welcome to learn about the Chime Choir. Learn how to make music, and have fun doing it!

Mon Sept 14, 6 to 7 p.m. – Rockin’ Ringers start – Youth from grade 6 and up who have some experience with handbells get together for the first rehearsal of the season.

Mon Sept 14, 7:30 to 9:15 p.m. – Ingram Ringers start – Adult handbell ringers get together for the first rehearsal of the season.

Thur Sept 24, 1 to 2 p.m. – English Conversation Fellowship – First gathering for parishioners and visitors learning English. Not a class, but a chance to practice English while discussing topics of interest.
