Christian Education this Fall

More options for spiritual growth.

One of our core values at St John’s is spiritual growth and this is reflected in a love of learning. People speak highly of the level of our preaching and they also see the dedication of our Compass Groups. From conversations with you, our parishioners, we have learned that some want real depth to their study while others want to be flexible in their commitments. In consultation with several parishioners, Drew+ and Anne+ have developed a Christian Education program that is entitled:

Real Faith in a Real World

We are very excited to be offering a program with three options designed to suit a range of study styles and commitments.

What kind of learning are you looking for?

1. Knowing Christ

For the casual participant: Monthly offerings that are single learning sessions on individual topics.

  • Men’s Supper Club – 2nd Tuesday of every month at St. John’s. Men are invited to enjoy a meal followed by a discussion around important pieces of Christian writing. This is a time to reflect both inwardly on ourselves and outwardly on the world around us.
  • Lychgate Women – 2nd Thursday of October, November, January and February at St. John’s. Women gather to listen to guest speakers, to read and discuss notable books of Christian writing, and to share life experiences from a Christian perspective.

2. Growing in Christ

For the participant who enjoys regular gatherings: Small groups that meet every week or two for studying, socializing, and doing service projects.

  • Compass Groups – Every one or two weeks, meeting either at St. John’s or at the home of a host participant. The heart of each group is the shared study of either a book from the bible or a contemporary book on Christian topics. In addition, group members take time to socialize, to pray together, and sometimes to undertake a project to serve the wider community. A list of Compass groups is here.

3. Making Christ Known

For the participant who wants to go deeper: Small study groups that include home study and that require a commitment for eight weeks.

  • The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows – Once a week for eight weeks. We will be studying this book and exploring our relationship with God – how we think we relate to God, how God wants us to relate to him as revealed in Jesus’s teachings, and methods that we can use to make these teachings real for us. To get the most from this in-depth study, participants will need to do some reading and study at home as well as join the weekly discussions. There are three sessions offered this fall:
    1. Wednesday evenings, 1st and 3rd week of each month
      – Led by Drew+ starting September 17, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
    2. Thursday mornings, 1st and 3rd week of each month
      – Led by Anne+ starting September 18, 10 a.m. to noon.
    3. Thursday evenings, 1st and 3rd week of each month
      – Led by Anne+ starting September 18, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
